Seafloor Investigation’s Greg Kurras recently worked with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) as one of two geophysical sonar experts to assist in the 2011 search for Air France Flight 447, which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on 1 June 2009. Nearly two years after the crash, the research team, led by WHOI, found the debris of Flight 447 approximately 3900 meters (12,800 feet) below the sea surface amongst the underwater mountains of

the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The team used three deepwater REMUS-6000 AUV’s operating off the M/V Alucia to conduct the search using low-frequency sidescan sonar. Once the wreckage was located, high-resolution sidescan sonar and cameras were used to map and image the debris site. The 2011

team that found the wreckage was composed of experts from WHOI, Airbus, Air France, France's Bureau of Investigation and Analysis (BEA), Waitt Institute for Discovery, Sherrell Offshore Services (SOS) and Seafloor Investigations (SFI).
